Tackling Fishing Tackle

While fishing is one of the oldest industries, and life sustaining activities in the world, it is not as simple as one may think. There is a lot more that goes into the task of catching a fish than just getting up early in the morning and finding a quiet spot to cast. The art of fishing takes knowledge of the fish being sought, and the proper equipment to catch it. The equipment of reference here is not only the all-important rod, but things like what kind of bait is best, which hook works most efficiently, the type of lure to get the most response, etc.; a.k.a. tackle!

To start a pole and line are necessary. A pole can be made of different types of material such as cane or bamboo. With this pole, it is necessary to use line, cut to the specific length of the pole and tied to its end. More commonly known is the fishing rod, which is made of things such as bamboo, or fiberglass and even graphite. A rod and reel system allows the angler (fisherman) to cast their bait/lures farther and also into deeper waters.

Next, the bait, which is a pretty simple item, yet depending on the level of proficiency it can get complicated. Bait can be fish-specific as all fish do not pursue all the same types of bait. There are two major types of bait; the first is live bait, or bait that comes from natural sources.

Live bait includes the most commonly used form of live bait, the earthworm. Another common type of live bait is the minnow, that is available in different sizes and it should be determined beforehand which size minnow to obtain in relation to the type of fish being hunted. Other forms of natural bait can even include things such as bread, corn or even bits of hot dogs.

The second type of bait is artificial bait and these types are known as lures. There are hundreds of different kinds of lures and each serves a different purpose. As a general overview lures can closely mimic live bait like flies, frogs, or minnows. Some lures can function to attract fish with sound or color. The many different kinds of lures are known by different names such as jigs, spinners, poppers or plugs, just to name a few!
