If you are a fisherman and you hear the name "Ugly Stik" what is the first thing that comes to your mind? A good rod, an affordable rod, a durable rod, or a popular quality rod might be a few thoughts. I personally think it is a bit of all of those. Though, is it a rod of the past or still a rod of today and the future? I believe Shakesepare has had this figured out for a long time and the Shakespeare Ugly Stik is not going anywhere.
First, a bit of history for you. Shakespeare has been around over 100 years and have been going strong in the fishing equipment business all the way up till now. This company does not look like they are going anywhere for a long, long time and there has got to be a reason why they have stayed in business for so, so long. I would step out on a limb here and say mostly because of quality and price. It doesn't really matter what you market these days, but if you can market a good quality product at an affordable price then it is going to sell! Then, when it does sell people are going to talk about it and then what? You, of course, are going to sell a lot, lot more. This is what Shakespeare has done with the Ugly Stik. The Ugly Stik came to be in 1976 and it is still selling to this day.
Now, the rod came out in '76 and I was born in '82. I got my first fishing rod when I was 2 years old and found out later, by discovering a picture of me holding it, that it was an Ugly Stik. 6 years later, I bought my first medium heavy casting rod, which was also an Ugly Stik, and guess what? I still use it today and right now at every Friday night fishing tournament I fish in. Now, that says something! It says that these fishing rods are strong and dependable which means they last a very long time. If you are still figuring the math, I've had this rod for 21 years and it has never broken or let me down!
In final, for the price and the quality, there is not a better made fishing rod. Where else can you buy a 30 dollar rod and it last 20+ years? With that being said, I'm confident to say that the Shakespeare Ugly Stik is definitely a good, affordable, durable, popular, and quality rod that has been around and will be around for a long time. It is the best all around fishing rod period!
