Saltwater Fishing Rods

Fishing rods have come a long way from the old bamboo pole of yesterday.

These days saltwater fishing rods are constructed from much more high tech materials such as fibre glass, carbon fibre and graphite are used to produce super strong, yet flexible fishing rods that still allow enough sensitivity to feel what’s going on at the other end of your line.

Salt water fishing rods vary in action as well as length, and can be found in sizes between 24 inches and 20 feet. The longer the rod, the greater the mechanical advantage in casting.

Trolling or bottom bashing Trolling or fishing the bottom offshore requires some pretty heavy duty gear, these rods are usually shorter in length and built to handle the stresses of big, hard fighting fish.

These rods are designed to flex and absorb the pull of a big fish while pulling back at the same time to assist the angler during upward drags, while keeping constant pressure during retrieval strokes.

The Right rod for the job Not all rods are created equal and that is why it is important to have the right fishing tackle on hand when you need it.

The first thing to do is decide what species of fish you are going to target and the environment you will most likely encounter.

You could normally get away with fishing from a river bank using a longer surf rod, but if there is over hanging trees or other low hanging obstacles this could be an issue.

Casting or spinning rods are usually able to be used for similar situations, but if larger fish are your target species then a light casting rod may let you down.
