Take Care Of Your Own Night Crawlers

Night crawlers or worms can be a very important part of your fishing trip. The thing is you dont have to count on the local bait shop when you can have all you need ready for your next fishing trip. Raising night crawlers at home is not something new. In fact for many people they have had worm boxes at home for many years. It really can be as simple as a 2 foot by 2 foot box or the bottom half of a rain barrel. The first key is to make sure they are filled with very good soil. You do want your containers to be made out of a natural material like plastic because other materials can heat up too much. The other thing is if your box is above ground make sure the materials are not see through because night crawlers do much better in the darkness of the night.

Many oldtimers have boxes buried in their back yards in the ground. They have them put in certain places for certain reasons. First of all they try and keep them in areas that see more shade. By doing this the box was always ready to dig up a container full of worms even for the last minute fishing trips. The next thing is we knew the worms wouldnt get too warm when it came to the hot summer months. Keeping the box out of the way means no one will be complaining about the worm box in the back yard. A big pointer I learned from making a mistake is make sure you leave the soil down a couple inches in the box or you will end up with an empty box because your worms decided to escape.

A good idea is to put any unused worms back in the box at the end of the trip. This will ensure there are worms ready to go for the next trip. Another way to keep the stock up on your worm box is to buy a batch from a worm farm and fill the box. Either way it is a good idea to always have a stock of worms ready to go.

Something you may have not thought about is a worm does actually require some room in order to be comfortable. On average we suggest that a half pound of worms likes to be in about 2 cubic feet. Oxygens do need oxygen so that is provided when we provide good surface area. Something else that is very important and cant be forgotten is drilling holes in the bottom of the box so the water can drain. Another little trick is ripping newspapers in strips to keep moisture in the ground which protects the worms.

You will be quite surprised at how many companies actually sell everything that is needed to grow good night crawlers or worms. Something else like you will always hear me say is do your homework. Some time spent reading will take you a long way into learning how to grow good healthy worms for a successful fishing trip because fish will look away from dead worms in almost all cases.
