Not a lot of people can boast to the fact of having a nice 20 pound Northern on the end of their line.

1. The first thing you want to do in the river is try and find slow or standing water. The big Northerns like to lay in the sun and they dont like to exert a lot of effort fighting current. Not to mention the bait fish like to come swimming into the slower moving water.

2. If you are using bait use big bait. If you are using lures like spoons or Rapalas make sure you use big ones. Big bait and big hooks catch big fish. Just remember you are fishing for big fish so dont expect a lot of average size fish when you are using big baits and lures.

3. The next one for Northern Pike fishing tips is practicing patience. You need to remember you are going after trophy fish. You could go days, weeks and months and never see that big fish. Your patience will determine how badly you want to catch a trophy.

4. Make sure you use equipment that can handle a big fish. That means use a strong rod, a bait caster reel, big line and a leader. You will be thankful when you land your trophy instead of watching it swim away after a long battle.

These are a few tips but personally I wouldnt take the time to only focus on these trophies. By doing this you will be giving away other opportunities to be catching all kinds of other fish like walleye, trout, perch and so forth. To me I would rather be catching fish then waiting for a big one.
