A lightweight, compact fishing rod in your arsenal, is an important tool to have if you are a serious angler.
The old days of having the 12 foot rigid bamboo pole are long gone, and technology has finally caught up with the needs of the travelling fisherman, or a fisherman who likes to go further than most, in some inhospitable terrain, in search of that secret spot, un-fished by the masses.
Once upon a time, telescopic fishing rods were no more than toys, and a rod that came apart in 2 or 3 sections was usually of inferior quality and prone to breaking right at the joins.
These disadvantages have now been ironed out, with the use of stronger, lighter blank materials, and stronger components, that now incorporate these joins into the design of the rod, to improve the rods flex and pulling capability.
If you are considering a compact fishing rod, I still recommend sticking to the more well known brands, such as Shimano, who have a huge range of great rods for all fishing applications, that come in 2 or 3 pieces that enable you to easily break them down, and carry in a suit case or back pack when travelling or camping.
No one says you have to take out your rod and use it on your holidays, but you can guarantee if you don't take one on your next holiday you will end up somewhere teeming with fish, and no tackle store in sight.
The reason for sticking with a well known brand and paying a little more, (in most cases) is to ensure quality.
The line guides, the butt of the rod, and the reel seats, all need to be good quality to ensure easy cast and retrieve, tangle free operation, and smooth action when doing any style of fishing.
It's not often you get to enjoy a spot of fishing, so the last thing you need is a fishing rod that is uncomfortable to use, or one that will let you down at the most crucial moment of the fight.
The type of fishing you are doing, and the fish species you are targeting, will largely determine what sized fishing rods you will need to carry, but for most cases you can find a 2 or 3 piece rod that will cover just about all of these situations to a degree.
The other alternative for things like beach fishing, are one of the telescopic fishing rods that come in sizes from about 6 feet, right up to the 12 feet long.
Either way, having a compact fishing rod will give you more freedom to go where ever you want to fish, or at least you can carry one in the glove box or under the back seat of your car, for those times you find the perfect patch of water and need to wet a line!
