Anglers all across southern Ontario are delighted that the lakes have frozen over and the ice fishing season is well under way. The gears been packed, the fish are waiting and fish fanatics from all over North America are heading to Muskoka to try and ice that monster from one of so many lakes the area has to offer.
Muskoka and more specifically, the Parry Sound district is well known amongst anglers as one of the best destinations in southern Ontario for fishing. Whether it is for walleye, crappie, lake trout, perch or pike, and a number of other fish species, the Parry Sound district of Muskoka offers everything an angler could possibly want. If you are an avid angler and you’ve never experienced a trip to this area of Muskoka, you owe it to yourself to plan a trip there and check it out for yourself.
Georgian Bay is a huge body of water that holds many different species of fish and because of its size you just never know what you might pull out of it. Parry Sound District also has many smaller but still very large and deep inland lakes that anglers can choose to fish.
Although perch, walleye and lake trout are some of the most sought after, nothing beats the rush of pulling a monster pike through an eight or ten inch hole in the ice. Catching a pike through the ice, although hardly uncommon can be a little tricky at times if you haven’t done a little homework beforehand. Pike tend to hang out around weed beds, rock beds and gradually sloping areas, so it’s always a good idea to find out as much as you can about the lake, and the area of it that you’re going to be fishing. It’s also not uncommon to catch them in thirty or more feet of water. If a lake contains pike and plenty of forage for them, you can almost be sure that there’s some huge pike in that lake.
For many anglers, once you find a good spot, catching pike in the five to eight pound range is also not that uncommon, but if you’re out to catch the monsters, it would definitely pay to find out as much as you possibly can about the lake and what other anglers are doing to catch them, and more importantly, if they are willing to share this information with you, what baits they are using? Unfortunately, a lot of anglers won’t be willing to give up this information but it’s certainly free to ask, and the worst case scenario would be a refusal to divulge the information to you, accompanied by a little chuckle. Don’t feel bad, we’ve all been there.
The good news is that there are lots of us that are more than willing to share and exchange information, as well as some tips and tricks we use to land, or ice in this case, the big ones. After all, like they say, “there’s plenty of fish in the sea” (lake). Hope you catch a monster this winter!
