Scratch and Dent:  On occasion, an outboard motor will be put on clearance because it has some form of damage or defect in the finish.  This is a really great way to get a big discount on your purchase, since you will know that the engine is still mechanically sound.  If the prop has substantial damage, you might want to replace it.  If the hood or shaft has a minor scratch, scuff, or mar in the finish, you can use it to haggle on price and get discounts that are greater than clearance pricing.

Major Rebates:  The most common form of rebates is to give back a certain amount of money for each horsepower of the engine.  This is a very common tactic used by some of the most well-known manufacturers.  If you are buying a larger outboard motor, the saving will sound better, but on smaller one, the percent off you will save is generally greater.  At the end of the day, the only thing that really matters is the bottom line, I suppose.  Just find out what the final price is and determine if the discount is substantial enough for you to buy.

Best Places to Shop

Dealerships:  Outboard motor dealers are the primary place that people think to look.  When you deal with authorized dealers, you will get any manufacturer discounts that are taking place and have a place to go if you have problems and need repairs or some sort of customer service after the sale.

eBay:  This is a surprisingly good place to shop.  Many people buy them when they find them at super steep discounts and sell them for a profit.  This might make it sound like you are spending too much, but you are still likely to do better on pricing than you will find at most dealerships.

Amazon:  Do not expect to find large outboard motors on clearance, but you can find ones that are 15 horsepower or less.  They sell Coleman and Mercury, just to name a couple.  Take a look and see what you can find online at this site.  You just might find the best deal possible for what you are trying to get.
