Saltwater Fishing Reels For The Beginner

When it comes to saltwater fishing, you must know what you are going to be fishing for, even if you do not know the exact species of fish you want to catch, you need to know how big of fish you are going for.

I will be explaining four of the most basic types of saltwater fishing reels that you will find in many stores and tackle shops worldwide, this may give you a better idea of what kind of fishing reel is right for you.

Let me start with the spin casting reel, this is the most common type of reel for the beginning fisherman. They are very easy to use and in most cases are very cheap, they are excellent for kids to practice on, and if they happen to break it then it is really no big loss. Almost every type of kids fishing rod and reel you see is a spin casting reel, they have all sorts of kid designs for them.

They are made for catching very small fish, and they are made to hold extremely light fishing line. Though many of them are cheap, they also sell high quality spin casting reels, and they will last you a long time, fishing reels are like everything else, you will get what you pay for.

Spinning reels have an open face, and the line is reeled in by a guide called a bail, these types of reels are available in both saltwater and freshwater fishing. They are the most commonly used fishing reels, as some are designed to hold light line and others are designed to hold heavier line up to 30 pounds.

These days almost every kind of spinning reel has a drag system, some are better than others, you will see fishermen using these types of reels on the bass fishing, snook, red fish, and saltwater flats shows that are on T.V. They can range from about 10 bucks to over a thousand, it all depends on what kind of fish you are going to be hunting and how heavy of a fishing line you want around the spool.

When you are fly fishing, you really dont even use the reel when you are casting, it is all in the rod, the only thing the reel is for is bringing the fish in. If you are freshwater fishing, you can get away with just about any type of fly fishing reel, but when you get to saltwater fishing, it differs quite a bit.

In saltwater, you want to make sure that your reel can handle the corrosion from the saltwater, also, the game fish that are caught when fishing saltwater tend to run a lot more, meaning that the reel must be able to hold a good amount of fishing line.

These are somewhat similar to bait casting reels, except they are not made for casting that far, but they are made to reel in some heavy duty game fish. It is very hard to find a low quality trolling reel, although the prices vary greatly, you wont find many that have a bad drag system.

These types of fishing reels are for the angler that loves to fish in the deep sea, they can be used for trolling and they can be used for picking up 100 pound grouper from a 100 foot of water or more. The main thing about trolling reels is that they are designed to hold very heavy line, from 30 pound test and up.
