Speckled Trout Fly Fishing Strategies
Speckled trout or specks as they are sometimes referred to are a very popular game fish that is sought after by many anglers. You can recognize the speckled trout easily because they have a long body with spots. The younger the fish the more spots they have on their back. Their mouths are yellow and they have two large canine teeth. They average about one pound although they can grow to be about sixteen pounds.
You can fish for speckled trout all year round so there are normally two different types of anglers that fish for them. You have the anglers that fish only in the spring and others that do so only in the winter. Of course, there are a few anglers that enjoy fishing all year round and when you learn a little about the speckled trout you will see why they're so popular. This species can be found in so many different areas they are easy to catch. Look for the speckled trout around underwater structures, fallen trees, docks, rocks, jetties, shallows, drop-offs, sandbars and flats.
Fly Fishing for Speckled Trout
One of the best methods for catching the speckled trout is fly fishing. When it comes to speckled trout a nine foot rod that weighs either five or eight pounds is usually recommended. Which one you should use depends on where and when you are fishing.
For example, the five pound rod works best in calm waters and in bay areas where the eight pound is best in windy conditions, rough waters and when you're surf-fishing. There's no particular type of fly fishing reel that you need to use but it should have at least a 150 yard capacity. A single action with a disk drag will work very well.
After choosing the equipment you need it's time to give fly fishing a try. Keep in mind that the speckled trout are affected by the tide regardless of where you are fishing. The general rule to follow is to fish during a moving tide. It can be either when the tide is moving in or out. This is the best time to fly fish because this is when the baitfish is the most plentiful and the speckled trout are after a good meal.
Fly fishing at night can be very productive when going after speckled trout. Fishing on docks with lights or using lanterns in or near the water will draw the baitfish to the area. The speckled trout will then follow the baitfish for an easy meal where you will be waiting. Make sure you don't cast directly into the area that is lit; this will scare the fish away. Instead cast beyond the area and reel your fly through where the fish are gathering.
Best Fly Fishing Strategies
Fly fishing strategies that can help you get off to a great start includes choosing the right flies. You want to choose something that is similar to what the speckled trout would eat naturally. Some of the best flies are the ones that imitate crabs, finger mullet, pinfish and shrimp. The clouser minnow is an excellent choice that can be used for most any type of fly fishing.
