Three Secrets for Catfishing in the UK

Catfishing is just as popular in the UK as it is anywhere else in the world. There are many different techniques used to catch the catfish and all of them work very well depending on the circumstances. The technique you use will depend on the season in which you're fishing, the type of water you're fishing in and the type of bait and equipment you're using to name a few things.

Regardless of how much experience you have reeling in the catfish; there are a few things that you can do to make your next UK catfishing trip a more productive one. Below you will find three secrets that will make catfishing in the UK more exciting by increasing the number of bites you can receive.

Fishing From the Bank, Shore or Piers

Not every angler uses a boat to go catfishing because you don't need a boat to reel in a nice size catfish. This is something that many anglers tend to forget.

You can be quite successful when fishing from a bank, pier or the shoreline if you know where to look for the cats. Search for an area that has underwater structures, holes, brush piles, stumps and other places where the catfish like to hang out and wait for prey. When fishing from a pier the catfish can usually be found around the buoys and the structures holding up the pier.

Fish one area for a few minutes and if you don't get any bites or when the bites stop, move to a new location. If fishing from a bank, look for a spot that is cleared out so you won't spend all your time getting your line untangled from the tree limbs. You can use any technique you like, just don't let down your guard. If you do, that'll be when the cat strikes and you'll miss your chance.

It's also a good idea to have a net handy to help you pull in the larger cats.

Choose Your Bait Carefully

It's true that some catfish will eat anything they can fit into their mouth. They're certainly not very picky. Nevertheless, some types of bait will attract catfish faster and more often than others. The type of bait you should use will partly depend on the type of catfish you're seeking out. For example, when fishing for the blue catfish or the channel cat, you will find that cut baits work the best. When seeking out the flathead catfish you would get more bites with live fish.
