Ocean Fishing Equipment for the Beginner

Ocean fishing can be quite an experience. There's a big difference between freshwater fishing and saltwater fishing. For one thing, some of the largest species of fish can be found in the depths of the ocean. There are a larger number of different kinds of fish species located here as well. If you're new at ocean fishing, then you need to take a little time to get familiar with some of the basic equipment you'll need.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that you must spend a small fortune on your fishing gear in order to be prepared for ocean fishing. It's true that you should invest in quality equipment that will last for many years but that doesn't mean that you must buy the most expensive gear available. There are many good quality items on the market that are also reasonably priced.

How to Choose Your Three Main Pieces of Equipment

The first thing that you need to know is that there are three main pieces of equipment needed in order to begin your fishing adventures. These include the rod, reel and the fishing line. These will be the first purchases you'll need to make and then you can begin adding some of the other gear you'll need to make your fishing trips more enjoyable and productive.

The first decision most anglers will need to make is what type of fishing rod to buy. The graphite is a good choice because it's strong and lightweight, which is a good combination for any beginner. Since you need a fishing rod that is easy to handle but one that you can also experiment with, a medium weight rod is usually a good choice. The next big decision will be what type of reel to choose for your rod.

The spinner reel is a good option because they're easier to use with their push button release system. Some of the other designs are more difficult to use and can be added to your gear after you have gained more experience.

The fishing line is important and should be matched to the type of rod and reel you have as far as weight goes. Eight to fourteen pound fishing line would be a good match for the medium weight rod and spinning reel. It's always a good idea to purchase good quality fishing line. It would be very disappointing to catch a good size fish only to lose it because the cheap fishing line you purchased snapped into.
