What is the Best Way to Catch Walleye?
The distant inland lakes that can be found north of Lake Superior feature nice size Walleye and what is great about these lakes is that they have these fish in high populations. There are some areas where these fish are not very popular, but there are areas that there are so many of them a fisherman wouldn't know where to start.
The color of the jig heads doesn't really matter; it is not an important factor. It is the color of the bait or the rubber that makes the difference when fishing for Walleye.
If you are fishing at night or if it is spring, you may want to use a small jig that is lighter than 1/8oz because the fish will be in the shallower waters during this time. However, when it is during the day or during summer months you will use a heavier jig, somewhere around the weight of about 1 1/2 oz as the Walleyes will be deeper in the water.
During the spring months, there are "hot" colors that are used as they work the best. These are black, bright yellow and bright red. Once the season has turned into summer, one will notice that bright yellow and white will slow down as being the best colors.
The best color to use is black as it always seems to work nicely, but you can also try something like a dark and smoky yellow. If not, you can go for a transparent green when the water starts to get a little warmer.
Some people think that bright colors are good to use in spring because the fish are still in their protection mode over their own spawning areas, and they also knock your jig in defense and will not bite.
When it comes to summer and the temperature is getting hotter, most of the big Walleyes prefer to go deep into the water. When it comes to this, what you should do is try and drift slowly through the water while using a worm harness.
Many people don't like to use a worm harness because it tends to drag on the bottom of the lake, but what you can do to stop this from happening is use a 3-way-swivel setup which is normally used together with Lake Trout techniques.
There is always a solution for everything. You don't have to not do something just because you think that it won't work. There is always something you can do to make the situation better, whether it consists of changing the procedure or just using something completely different. It is up to you.
During the months of spring, the method you would want to use to catch Walleye is to troll down the shoreline just before the sun sets or just at day break with a Thunder Stick or a Rapala. If you want to lure the big Walleye in, what you will do is use a 4 inch Rapala or Thunder Stick with some liquid fish scent.
