Fly Fishing Tackle - Explained In Plain English
When it comes to fly fishing tackle, there are many things that could be considered a part of that group. I will be going over a few of the things that you should have when you are out fly fishing, more than just the fly fishing rod and reel.
You will have a variety of flies to use as bait for the fish. Flies are meant to mimic the look and movement of a fishes natural food source. Some fish prefer different flies, and when you use what they are used to eating, your chances are better of landing a bite. Keep several different types of flies close at hand so you can choose the right fly for the specific fish you are angling for.
Next important thing is the type of fishing line you will be using. In fly fishing the weight of the line is very important, as it is used to cast the fly out, unlike regular saltwater and freshwater fishing with conventional rods. You will have to make sure that the line will fit the reel and work with it properly.
When you are fly fishing, more than likely you will be standing in the water, which is also known as wading. For this you will need a pair of waders to put on. There are many styles of waders that are out there and you will have to pick a pair that will meet your criteria of fly fishing.
Another part of the fishing outfit you should have on top of the waders is a fishing vest. This makes it convenient to store some of your fly fishing tackle in. This allows you to have quick access to flies and other things, instead of returning to shore every time you have to make an adjustment.
Having a pair of good fishing pliers is also a good idea to have on hand. You can keep them in your vest or your waders. The pliers make the process of removing the hook from the fished mouth a much easier task, and also increasing the fishes chance of survival.
The last thing you should have as a part of your fly fishing gear is a camera, specifically a water proof camera. If you are a catch and release fisherman, as most fly fisherman are, you will want to take a picture if you are fortunate enough to catch a trophy fish.
Of course there are other things that can have as apart of your fly fishing gear set up, such as nets and gloves, along with other stuff. But if you are just starting out these are the essential things that you will need to start fly fishing.
