Old School Buoy Trick

Now even as this season rolls around I find myself kicking the old oops I mean teaching fishermen the old throwing the buoy trick.
Yes this is an empty water bottle with yellow string wrapped around it with a 16 ounce banks sinker tied to it.
Throwing the old buoy out is as old as the kicking the can game! But oh so productive especially when it comes to keeping up with those slippery fish!
Back in the old fishing days before loran/GPS as well as artificial reefs finding fish in the ocean was so very simple. I was taught that all destinations were achieved by watching my watch for instance: Black fish banks were a 1 hour and 10 minute riding in a slow boat to china. Once clearing the sea buoy, the snapper banks were a one hour and 45 minute ride when doing the unbelievable speed of 15.5 knots. The rule of thumb was so very simple, all we did was throw out the buoy when we had run the time designated. And then we just fished around the area using the thrown buoy as a reference. If we moved away from our reference buoy we just threw out another one.
It is an old school trick that works like a charm especially when it comes to keeping up with the whereabouts of fish!
