An excellent guide to the clear advantages of using small fishing boats on North America's lakes and large ponds. Also some safety advice. Some tips on using small fishing boats, canoes or kayaks to your advantage when fishing and/or angling these bodies of water.
Many of the lakes in North America these days do not allow larger marine fishing boats. This is very good for a great many seasoned anglers who love to fish these lakes and large ponds, as they don't have the usual weekend mad rush of larger marine vessels churning the water, leaving the prospect of fishing in a much quieter environment that not only is kinder to the environment, but ensures your own peace and quiet too as well as often, increasing your chances of a much better catch. With the hundreds upon hundreds of lakes and large ponds spread over this great continent, you too can enjoy the peacefulness of your surroundings through the use of smaller fishing boats or even kayaks and canoes. These restricted lakes and large ponds are like gold mines of above average fish, especially if you use a small fishing boat to navigate these hot spots.
Many lakes which ban the use of motors do have rental boats available, but they're not to everyones taste, least of all, what most anglers do not enjoy, is having their angling times curtailed by having to return the rental boat at a certain fixed hour of the day. If this applies to you or your friends there is still an option available to you and that is buying either a new or used small fishing boat or canoe or kayak to reach these fishing hot spots with ease. Depending on the size of the craft you are perhaps looking to buy, many are actually quite capable of being placed either on top of your vehicle or certainly, if a pick up, in the back of it. Gone are the troubles of hard work and man handling too, often associated with larger craft especially is planning to use a canoe or kayak. These craft, if you take care of them as obviously you will, should give you years of use and pleasure, not only to survey your surroundings in utter peace and quiet but too, can be used to great success in angling in those spots that many larger craft could only dream of reaching. Many, many anglers actually prefer these smaller fishing boats to fully explore the possibilities associated with many bodies of water, that have virtually no one else upon them.
A small fishing boat with or without a little motor can get you into shallow coves and stream channels that people cannot often get to on foot, for example because of mud etc. A lot of the time too, lakes and reservoirs are dammed up, and the streams leading into them are far away from any parking areas. Not many people have the desire, or the inclination to travel by foot all the way into those seemingly impossible areas to get to, those nooks and crannies that often hold onto the fattest fish in the lake. In the summer months, many species of fish, love to migrate their way to stream mouths, especially if the body of water is of a shallow depth generally, because they need to find some cooler water. Sometimes, not always, fish can congregate in large numbers around these deeper stream mouths and when you glide over silently in your small fishing boat or canoe / kayak, you will be astonished at the sheer numbers just waiting there ready for you to hook. A great many lakes and larger ponds have this type of scenario, you just need to get out and explore these possibilities and a small fishing boat or canoe and/or kayak allow you to do just that.
When you navigate from location to location in your small fishing boat, you can always throw out a line or two, and troll. The lure you use to troll has a great deal to do with just how deep the actual water is. One of the best lures actually is a small spoon. It has very good flash and action no matter what speed you are travelling at across the water and you can find lots of them to try out at different depths. If you are moving around a shallow cove, you can cast out a top water lure far behind your small fishing boat or canoe, then place your rod in a holder or whatever else you want to use and just cruise around. A bass will easily be able to set the hook on themselves when they set themselves on the lure. Using live bait too in small lakes is very productive, but with a small fishing boat you also get out into deeper water if needs be and from there fish directly above the fish. When you cast from shore you often can't control the depth you want to fish, and the deeper water is where all the fish tend to hold, especially in the hotter summer months.
Finding your ideal small fishing boat or canoe / kayak is very easy these days, of course the choice is entirely in your hands whether you want to go with a new small fishing boat or canoe / kayak or a used small fishing boat. eBay can actually turn up some great deals and this should be your first port of call to at least discover the kind of prices you can expect to pay. As with all water related activities, safety is always of a primary concern. Make sure you always wear an approved life jacket, not a buoyancy aid, too always tell someone where you are going and what time you expect to be back again. Common sense saves lives.
