Catching the big catfish is never an easy task but night fishing is one way for us to have the advantage. Here are a few tips that will make your night fishing a great experience. The main three ways to catch a big catfish is either jug fishing, trotline fishing or with rod and reel and all of these are suitable for night fishing.
The summer months are best for catching catfish at night because the long hot summer days makes the big catfish lay on the bottom in search of cooler temperatures. When the day temperature starts to drop and evening approaches the catfish will start feeding. Night fishing with the cooler temperatures is also a better experience for the fisherman.
Here are a few good tips for night fishing:
1. When fishing with a rod and reel - a well lit area is necessary to be able to bait and cast you line. When your line has been cast and you are ready to catch the big catfish try this tip. Instead of using the old hold your line to see if you have a bite purchase a box of glow sticks like the kids play with. You can snap them so they light up, now strap them to the end of the rod with zip ties this will give you enough light to see if the end of the pole moves which means you have a bite. One of the glow sticks can also be strapped to the rod close to the reel for extra light there. The best bait for rod and reel fishing at night is either worms, shad or shrimp. Being quite is another good tip as fish do hear and do not come around if there is to much noise.
2. Jug fishing and trotline fishing are about the same and either are a good choice to catch the big catfish at night. Both should have the hooks set close to the bottom because that is where the really big catfish lay. I always try to check the lines and put new bait on the hooks close to dusk and at daylight. If they are really biting good I will check around noon also. My bait preference for jug fishing and trotlines are perch, cut shad and blood bait.
I have always enjoyed catching the big catfish at night, and I’m sure lots of anglers would agree. With this information I hope you will give night fishing a try.
