New Sea Trout Rivers To Fish

It would be no surprise to many that the industrial revolution of the last 200 years has had a dramatic effect on our waterways and rivers with pollution waste being run off into them. This has caused the reduction and in some cases the demise of natural species including Salmon and Sea Trout. It is now after the tightening in European and world legislation that it is illegal to run off these pollutants into the waterways and in doing so there has been a flourish and the natural life-cycle is making its way back into once lifeless rivers. It is this clean up that has enabled Sea Trout to make their way back to rivers and it is here I want to tell you about new Sea Trout rivers to fish.

During the time of industrialisation as well as waste materials a lot of factories build weirs to divert water through turbines to power them. These man made blockades are a major obstacle for migratory species and needed to be removed or changed to allow these fish to reach their spawning grounds. So when the river has been put back to as near as originally possible Sea trout and Salmon can now make there way up the natural flow. Some ingenious people have created water ladders for these fish to move up through them and it can be a marvel to watch them make their way to the spawning grounds.

There have been many rivers that were totally de-voided of natural stock and so restocking programs had to be induced from other rivers. Here is a question, when restocking from another river do the new fish behave like the re-stocked rivers ancestors or like the ones from the river they came from. Some of you may be thinking what do I mean but it has been documented that fishing techniques or fly patterns that works on one river will not induce a take on another. So it is with angling excitability that I ask the question do you have a river new you that has started to show promise and if so what techniques will work on it.

I find it brilliant to think that a river once devoid of natural life can become a new fishing ground for anglers around the world. Maybe you live in a city and that once lifeless canal or river that flowed past the car factory now has a vibrant stock of wild trout maybe even Sea Trout or Salmon.

There is a new angling pastime going on in France called urban fishing were anglers are walking along these waterways in their jeans and t-shirts with a back pack, a rod, reel and flies. These guys are getting out of school or work and getting a few hours in before going home. I think it's a great way to relax after a stressful day at the office. Maybe this is going on close to you.

Here in the North of Ireland we have had a few rivers close to angling over the last few years due to low stock numbers and the debate goes on as to why this has happened, trawling at sea, poor river management or catch and release, etc, etc. That is a topic for another article but this incoming season of 2013 has seen a few of these rivers being opened up to fly fishing with a strict catch and release policy as the numbers have been slowly increasing and I for one can't wait to get to them to see for myself and hopefully catch and release a Sea Trout or two.
