Gas Prices And Fishing

Well it looks like we are going to be paying $5.00 plus for marina gas this boating season. That will definitely cramp the style of a lot of boaters including me. It will also drive up the cost of charters.

The question is. Is there anything we can do about it. There’s not much we can do to directly influence the price of fuel but we can work together. By that I mean sharing info on where the fish are being caught. I know a lot of guys/gals probably won’t do this but it is one way to limit running around looking for the fish.

One suggestion is to set up a radio channel (channel 84 has been talked about) to monitor. A great idea but people will have to be willing to share and there will have to be some discipline if it’s going to work. A gabfest channel won’t work.

Another idea is to follow the existing fishing forums. There is a great deal of good information in these forums. Just google fishing forums and then narrow it down to those forums that are in your area and deal with the type of fishing you do. It works best if you join the conversation in the forums. If you do that on a regular basis and are free with your information then it is likely other people will share freely with you.

Another idea is to follow the fishing blogs for your area. Most of them are area specific so you can narrow things down to the area you fish. The good blogs post up to date marine weather and fishing reports. They follow the local charter captains so their info is current and truthful. This is a great spot to check the night before or morning of your fishing trip. It will give you a glimpse of the current weather and some idea where the fish are being caught.

Don’t underestimate the value of current information. If you are like some Lake Erie anglers I know you may be traveling several hours to get to the lake. The general weather forecasts are just that. General. The good blogs follow the marine weather closely and will be posting current conditions, water temperatures and any marine warning that might arise. It’s a real bummer to travel several hours only to find the lake to rough to fish.
