Beachcasting Technique and Safety
Obtaining maximum distance when beachcasting is all about transferring the compression built up in the rod tip by the caster`s technique to the lead weight. Sloppy rods absorbs much of the rod power, whereas rigid, fast-tapered rods create the velocity for maximum casting distance.
As air resistance and other drag factors increase with speed, it makes sense to use relatively to heavy sinkers of between size 5 and 6oz. for long range casting. To maximize on distance casting a monofilament line of between 10-15lbs test is ideal, to which is knotted a 8-9 yards of shock leader of 40 - 60lbs test mono-zero memory. This alleviates sudden snaps off which would occurs for instance a 4oz lead is tied directly with 10lbs line test and wound up on a fast taper beachcaster rod for a long range casting.
Beware!!
An unattached lead zooming down the surf line towards other angler would be a horrifying accident just waiting to happen. So do not tempt fate by using a improper setup and ensure all knots are firmly tied to good quality proper poundage lines, swivels, hooks and sinker lead links.
The reel line can be much thinner than the shock leader as it does not suffer during the compression build up of the casting rod and in effect undergoes little strain when fishing, unless the rig began to stuck on the sea bottom and you need to pull and break the line. Another factor worth considering is that if a heavier or larger diameter reel and line is used to creating greater water resistance, a heavier sinker lead is a must to hold on to the sea bottom. This could mean a reducing casting distance potential beyond the weight size of 6oz or more.
For distance casting, let says you want to cast about 150 yard plus, there is actually something that you can choose a setup of a spinning reel or a multiplier reel, except that upon the retrieval the latter is smoother and can easily be wound against weed/rocks due to the line going indirectly around the spool and not having at right angles via the bale arm, which create friction despite a roller in the bail arm unit, because it takes more practice to achieve long distance casting using a multiplier reel. The beginner is probably wise to start off with a spinning reel. Then once the casting technique from a spinning reel is mastered, then a multiplier reel can be tried too.
Apart from the routine maintenance the only thing to remember about the fixed spool reels is to be fill to the brim with line or potential casting distance is greatly reduced. Friction from the spool`s lip quickly cut down the casting range once line level falls below quater inch from the lip of fully loaded spool, correct loading to spool could therefore add up to 50 yards of casting distance.
If you considering using a multiplier choose the best that you can afford to buy. Those fitted with the level wind mechanism will ensure you properly as a beginner and the line is wound evenly back and forth across the spool rather than like a cotton ball on the non level wind mechanism. If you are being guru`s guide properly usage of multiplier you had bought. It will be better in casting and guiding the lines with your finger and smoother than the level wind mechanism. This steps is where i can share with you in my next articles.
