If you are hoping to catch the bigger (5-6 pounders) more wily bass fish you that you know are hiding in the lake then you may have to resort to some clever tricks yourself.
Try a few of these.
1) Use big swim bait or ten to twelve inch worms if fishing at night. You may not get any bites or you may hit the jackpot.
2) Try using plastic baits like Lizzard or Senko.
3) You may want to use a heavier rod with a round reel using at least 50# monofilament line. If a biggie strikes you will be glad for want all the help you can get.
4) Focus on fishing in the deeper water especially in deep cannels or holes where the lunkers like to hang out. You will need a depth finder to locate these places or you can use a jig to find the deeper water. If you fish the lake often and you do not have any electronics then it will be worth your while to take some soundings using a long enough length of thin weighted line. Mark the line by tying a knot every 5 or 10 foot and then do a rough survey, recording the depth and position. This will give you a good idea of the shape of the lake floor so you can work out a strategy.
5) In these spots try to find out what the bottom is made up of. Clean grass and mulched leaves create a healthy aerated bottom which the big fish love.
Quietly, Always Quietly
6 )Stay away from soft mushy bottoms with algae.
7) Another good spot is usually where a stream enters the lake, so look for deeper holes in that area.
8) If you want to use a jig then Rage craw or Rage chunk is the recommended trailer. Apparently (I have not used it myself) the big bass cannot resist it. For more exciting top water action the - 3:16 no bull frog - is also worth throwing around.
9) If you are fishing in a steep sided pit lake with very clear water then the weed beds away from the shore is the best place to aim for. In these sensitive areas stealth fishing using a boat with a trolling motor is what it's all about. The big bass in these lakes a are very aware of what is happening around them so you have to become part of the environment to have any success catching these very slippery customers. Look for isolated structures that can hide your prey and approach it silently.
10) The best time to catch big bass is often in low light or at night when they are roaming about looking for prey.
The point of this article is to encourage you to keep on trying because somewhere out there is a big bass with your name on it.
