136 Pound Catfish Caught - Should Be A New Record But

News Flash Monster Catfish Caught! Should have been a State Record!

The BIG CATFISH was a blue catfish.

A 136 pound blue catfish was caught in Berkeley County, South Carolina, the state record of twenty one (21) years is a 106 pound blue catfish and it will remain the record. The state officials stated that the 136 pound blue catfish did not change the record because it was caught on a trotline which is a heavy fishing line with a lot of baited hooks attached and not with a rod and reel. To qualify the state record must be caught on a rod and reel. I can not even imagine catching a 106 pound, much less a 136 pound catfish, or any other fish, on a rod and reel.

Officials stated that regardless of the catching method, the fish shows the potential of what size of catfish can be found in the local area. I bet this makes all the local fishermen get out there rods and reels and head to the area rivers and lakes.

There are 3 common species of Catfish in America, Channel, Flathead, and Blue Catfish. Channel are the most widespread and common and smallest, Flathead are he second largest and second most common, and Blue are the largest and can only be found in limited areas.

Let’s take a look at some of the catfish records. Not all these records are caught on rod and reel but in any rate they are amazing records,

Channel catfish are noted as being the smaller of the catfish. The channel catfish record only weighed in at 58 pounds and was landed in the Santee-Cooper Reservoir in South Carolina, July 7, 1964. It looks like South Carolina is noted as a great place to fish.

There are 9rRecords for Blue Catfish over 100 lbs

a 124lbs was caught in 2005 from the Mississippi River; in 2004 the big catch of the day was a 121lbs catfish while fishing on the Texas side of Lake Texoma; In 1988 a 118lbs was caught on the Oklahome side of Lake Texoma this one was noted to be caught on a jug line; 1964 was when the 117lbs blue cat caught in the Osage River, in Missouri, on a trotline; then in 1995 near West Memphis Arkansas on the Mississippi River a 116lbs was recorded as a record; in 2008 a 113lbs blue cat was caught in San Vincente California; a 112lbs catfish was caught in 1998 in the Cumberland River in Tennessee; 111 lbs catfish was caught in 1996 on Wheeler Lake in Alabama; and a 108lbs catfish was caught in the Mississippi River near Memphis in 2007.

Flathead Catfish records of fish over 100lbs

In 1982 a 139lbs flathead was caught in the Arkansas River, Arkansas it was noted to have been caught on a snagline; a 123lbs was caught in 1998 on Elk City Lake, Kansas; and in 1977 a 106lbs flathead was snagged on a trotline in Wister Lake, Oklahoma.

Now with spring just around the corner all the fishermen will be ready to get out there and catch the big catfish. Here’s hoping some of you will catch the monster catfish that will beat one of these records but if not I know you will enjoy trying.
