Using A Trolling Motor With Canoes And Kayaks – Budget For 7 Items

If you are thinking of getting a kayak or canoe and then converting it into a fishing or leisure machine, then here are 7 requirements and items you should budget for when getting started. Once you enter this dream world of pollution free boating and stealth fishing, you will always be wondering why it took you so long. So while summer is still here and those glorious autumn days are waiting in the wings, don’t delay any longer and get involved now. Here are some important points you will have to budget for to get started.

Kayak or Canoe

1) This could be your biggest single expense when starting out especially if you decide to buy brand new quality equipment. If you have a small budget then take your time and look around because I am sure you can find almost new second-hand boats. I have seen many good ones for sale at very reasonable prices.

Sometimes these boat owners are very happy to sell their boat and may even throw in some other items like life jackets and anchors etc. as a bonus to complete the deal.

Fishing Equipment

2) If are starting out from scratch you will need to budget for items like a fishing rod and reel, fishing tackle and other equipment which includes rod holders and a fishing net. You will most certainly be required by law to wear or at least carry on board a life jacket per person. Other safety items you are required to keep on board with you should be kept in a brightly coloured water proof container. Most marine outlets will have these containers already stocked with the required safety items.

The Trolling Motor

3) You will also need to buy a suitable electric trolling motor with thrust levels between 30lbs to 55lbs depending on the size and shape of the kayak or canoe and also the number of people that will on average be in the boat.

To power this motor a 12 volt heavy duty 105 amp hour battery needs to be budgeted for. To keep things simple I would recommend getting a power centre where you can store the battery and keep it safe in the boat and to maintain it. Most power centres already contain a 60 amp circuit breaker but if not then this is another extra you will otherwise need to allow for.

A good portable or fixed station battery charger is the last item you will need.

If your canoe or kayak does not have a transom to fix the motor to then you will have to buy or make one. Making your own for most boats is pretty simple to do and if you are stuck for ideas search for pictures on the internet.

Transport

4) You will also have to think about how you are going to transport the boat around. Using roof racks on you vehicle is probably the easiest way to go but they can be expensive. Just be sure they are strong enough to carry the load.
