Sometimes when you are fishing, do you find that you really have to to drop your bait down deep? Fish are nnot necessarily the most cooperative of creatures and dont always congregate in their thousands near the surface, where it is that much easier to catch them. If your depth sounder or fish finder is alerting you to fish down in the depths, a downrigger can really be an advantage.
What actually is a downrigger?
It is really simple. It is just a spool that holds between 200 " 600 feet of steel cable. Connected to the spool is a weight of between 6 " 12 pounds. As well as this, there is a quick-release line gripper, as you may have seen used with a clothespin.
How does it work?
The fishing lines from your rods are connected to the quick-release mechanisms. After this, the complete assembly is lowered down to the depth you want. This way, the bait is distant from the weight and line gripper so as not to spook the fish. If a fish takes the bait, the line is released from the gripper, so it is just you and the fish!
Some downriggers come equipped with fish-attractant properties (either electrical, or a special kind of paint), but not most of them.
There are quite a few companies that manufacture downriggers. These include basic models designed for the recreational fishermen right up to highly sophisticated models for commercial fishing concerns. Cannon are one of these companies that offer a complete range of downriggers, from a basic manual feed to an electronic motor quick release operation. Also on offer is a downrigger equipped with a built in fish finder " perfect for catching the fish you find in the depths!
Downriggers operate at their best when used for deep trolling and some even include an electronic crank that will raise the entire assembly. If you are looking to access deeper schools of fish, these are highly recommended.
