2016/7/16 16:39:23

California is a beautiful state with many attractions. One activity that is growing in popularity each year is the sport of fishing for crappies. More and more anglers are learning that there are many lakes in California where the crappies are plentiful.

They are a common species of fish that is also known by other names such as papermouth, bridge perch, goggleye and speckled perch. You may not hear much about crappie fishing in California but that doesn't mean it's not some of the best you will ever enjoy.

The black crappie is a dark color and has spots on both of its sides. The white crappie is a lighter color with eight to nine stripes lined vertically down both of its sides. These have six dorsal spines where the black crappie has seven to eight. You will find the white crappies are more abundant in the southern part of the state while the black crappies are more common in the northern parts.

Where to Find the Crappies

You may be a little surprised to learn that the waters of California are the home to both the black and the white crappies. There are many places where you can go fishing and reel in this species so it doesn't matter where you are, the fishing should be great. More anglers are starting to realize that this species is more abundant in these waters than they expected, especially if they are new to the area.

A few of the lakes where you will find crappies include Clear Lake, Big Bear Lake, Lake Sutherland, Lake McClure and Lake Camanche. These are just a few of many lakes that are scattered across California, there are many more throughout the state. Whether you are visiting California and searching for a fun way to spend your vacation or you're living in the area, you should be able to enjoy some great crappie fishing.

Tactics for Reeling in the Crappies

When fishing for crappies in California there are several tactics that will work very well. The one you choose will depend on where and when you're fishing and what equipment you have available to use. The five methods that are used the most often and with the best results are listed below.
Casting
still fishing
jigging
drifting
trolling

All five of these tactics will work great in the waters of California. You can choose the one that suits your needs the best and this will depend on what type of gear you have access to.

Trolling allows you to fish several lines at once, which can have many advantages. However, this is not an option if you don't have access to a boat.

Drifting is a very popular tactic that is used by many anglers. Still fishing, casting and jigging are great ways to get close to the crappies without scaring them away. After all, crappies can spook very easily especially in clear waters.

Anything that helps you get close to this species improves your chances of reeling in more fish.
