Tying Fishing Knots - What You Should Know

It is easy to see the fishermen who know how to tie a fishing knot. They are the ones with the smile on their face who landed that nice fish. They rarely come back from a day of fishing empty handed, either with that trophy fish or of the pictures and stories of that trophy fish if they catch and release.

Every fly fisherman needs to know this basic fundamental skill, which is how to tie fishing knots properly. The second thing he needs to know is which fishing knot to use in which situation. Actually, without fishing knot tying skills you will likely always struggle at fly fishing. This is a flaw you can easily fix by brushing up on your fishing knot tying skills.

Every fly fisherman should know how to tie the basic Uni knot. It is probably the most common fishing knot that fly fishermen use because it works well in low light conditions and can be tied easily by fishermen whose eyesight isn't what it use to be.

There is an assortment of fishing knots that every good fly fishermen should know. I have listed a few below.

Albright Knot - This type of fishing knot can tie lines of different diameter together, joins super braid line to a nylon leader, and also joins a leader to a fly line.

Arbor Knot - This type of fishing knot ties the line onto your reel.

Berkley braid knot - Ties super braid line onto a hook.

Clinch knot - This type of fishing knot ties your line to the hook.

Dropper Loop - This knot puts a perpendicular loop on your line, which allows you to attach a 2n d line or hook to your leader.

Egg loop - This allows you to attach bait to your hook.

Palomar Knot - This fishing knot allows you to tie the line onto a hook or swivel.

Super Braid Knot - This fishing knot allows you to tie super braid onto your hook.

As you can see there are a lot of different ways to tie fishing knots. The above examples are only a few of the many fly fishing knots you can create. It all depends on the situation that you're in at the moment as to what fishing knot you should use.

Basically, if you want to land the big trophy fish, you should have the know-how to tie at least a few of these knots.

Even better, learn how to tie them all and never have a bad day at the lake again and never have to tell that embarrassing story of the one that got away.
