Surf Fishing Can be a Great Deal of Fun and Even Become an Everyday Activity
Mankind has been fishing seemingly forever, but it has been only the last couple of centuries that we have done it as a hobby. Before that, it was a necessity and the food it generated helped to keep us alive. There are almost as many different ways and types of fishing as there are stars in the sky. Some of the different styles of fishing are the following; fresh water, salt water, fly fishing, hand line fishing, deep sea fishing, and the list goes on and on.
Surf Fishing is a particular interesting way of enjoying this fascinating sport, because you really get up close and personal with Mother Nature. It involves either standing on a sandy shore or even wading out into the ocean, before you cast out your line and hope for the best.
This style of fishing is certainly not for everybody, because you need to be very patient and be willing to deal with all kinds of weather conditions if you are ever going to be successful. The people that love it, almost become addicted to the activity because it is so exhilarating when they finally catch the big one they have been going after for so long. In addition, the results do vary by the season and there are only a limited number of good locations in the US where you have a pretty good chance of actually catching something.
Just because you live close to the ocean, does not mean that you can become a surf fisherman. The bottom of the ocean that is located close to the beach in most instances is simply sand, which does not provide an adequate survivable habitat for most fish. Most small fish, which the big fish feed on need some type of protection like rocks, reefs or a ship wreck.
The seasons also play a big part in surf fishing, because at certain times of the year large schools of fish will migrate close to shoreline and when that happens, it really livens up the action. This type of fishing also requires special equipment.
One of the most important things that you will need is an extremely large rod and reel that allows you to cast great distances. Some fisherman take it to the extreme and even attached balloons to their lines so that their bait can be flown 100's of yards from the shoreline before it drops into the ocean.
Surf fishing and Striper Fishing is becoming more and more popular each year. A lot of it has to do with being right out in the environment and dealing with everything that it can throw at you. Another reason is of course the huge amount of excitement that is generated when you finally real in something that you have targeted for so long. If you have heard about this style of fishing and were wondering if it was right for you, the only way you will ever find out is by giving it a try. Good luck, and may the fishing gods be with you!
