Basic Tips For Beginning Fishermen

Fishing is an activity that can be enjoyed for your entire life. The problem that most people run into is that they fail to learn how to fish. Successful fishing involves more than simply casting a gob of worm under a bobber out into the water. It requires a knowledge of the fish you are ta't be in targeting as well as the water you are fishing. Here are a few tips to help you get started. 

 

 

Start with basic equipment

Don't be in too much of a hurry to rush out and purchase the most expensive rod and reel combo in the store. A nice rod and reed combo that comes as a package deal is more than enough for someone who is just learning. You will find these packages are inexpensive and easy to use. 

The spincast combo is the easiest to learn. The reason I am recommending the combo is that it will come with a rod and a reel that are sold as a package. The rod and reed are selected by someone who knows what rod was made to go what what reel. So you will be purchasing a package that was designed to be used together. 

First of all, you will notice that the reel has a trigger on the back of it. This trigger acts as a switch and is intended to be pressed using your thumb. When you press this button the reel is ready to cast.  Before you press the button you need to have the pole in your two o'clock. The press the button and keep it depressed, quickly whip the rod to your ten o'clock and release the button. Once you take your thumb off the button the line will freespool off the reel. 

If you are having a difficult time getting used to this there is an easy exercise to help you. first of all you need to tie a weight to the end of your line. This weight needs to be heavy enough to pull line off of your reel. Hold the rod straight out from your body and press the button. Hold the button for a few seconds and then let it go. You will notice that the line will feed out until the weight hits the ground. Do this several times until you get used to the way your reel works. Now you are ready to begin casting.  You will begin your cast by holding the rod in your 2 o'clock and press the button. Next whip the rod in a forward motion to your two o'clock. As soon as the rod hits your two o'clock release your thumb from the button and allow the line to feed out. Do this several times and pay attention to where the weight lands. Begin calibrating your motion with where the weight lands to work on your accuracy. 

Once you have gotten used to the action of casting, begin working on accuracy. The best piece of advice I can give you is to end your cast with your hand and the pole pointing at your target and to keep your arm motionless until the weight lands. If you move your arm it will cause the line to move and then your weight will veer off course. 

Casting requires practice. The best place to practice is your backyard or another area where you will not hurt anything. Practice until you feel comfortable, then you are ready to begin using hooks. You are ready to go to the water and do some real fishing once you are comfortable with casting!
