European Cycling Holiday Ideas

Cycling has taken Europe by storm. Not only has it become popular to show off your bike in the city, but also in the great outdoors. As society discusses more and more the need to choose ethical holidays, there's never been a better time to hop on your bike. Avoid road trips opting for two-wheeled transport instead. You can discover so much more than when limited by roads and available parking spaces!
Not having your own bike shouldn't cause problems. Bike rental businesses are booming both within cities and further out.

Cycling the Baltics

The three Baltic states are perfect for cycling thanks to their bike-friendly terrain. You won't find any unbeatable mountains in the northern lands where the highest summit Suur Munamagi in Estonia - is a mere 318 metres above sea level.
Local laws allow cycling on all major roads, and footpaths in city and town centres. Many rural roads aren't tarmacked so be prepared for some rough riding. Mountain bikes are the best choice for Baltic biking.
Flora and fauna in the Baltic states is pleasantly wild. Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia boast some of the world's densest forest coverage. Animals like deer live happily among the pine trees. Make sure not to disrupt their natural habitat. Many municipalities with bike tracks will advise visitors of rules and regulations in place to safeguard nature's wonders.
Cyclists braving the route through all three countries will spend a considerable amount of time travelling along the seaside. Baltic beaches are beautiful, some sandy, some pebbled. If possible, spend a night under the shelter of one of the northern seaside pine trees.
Before setting off, read up on the local flora. The luscious Baltic forests are full of edibles from spring right through to autumn. Mushrooms, berries and leaves can be eaten but you have to make sure you know exactly what you're doing. Some are poisonous!

Cycling in the Lake District

Cycling in the Lake District is a tad challenging. As one of the UK's most mountainous areas, don't be surprised to find many routes will take you up and then straight down again. Lake District weekend breaks are popular among mountain bike-loving Brits. You'll often find families discovering the area together.
Those looking for a less demanding cycle holiday can go along the roads. Cumbria's quaint countryside lanes aren't traffic-heavy, and drivers are used to cyclists. Lots of the local villages have special bike trails, and some of the old railway lines have been regenerated too.
The scenery is stunning as you whiz along enjoying the Lake District's fresh air. The deep valleys are dotted with lakes that you can swim in during the summer months for a relaxing moment after a day's cycling. Some of the finer Lake District hotels even offer spas so you can really rest and recuperate for another day on two wheels.
Local pubs are aplenty and serve tasty refreshments both indoors and out. Traditional cuisine is suitably filling. You could be enjoying pies or Cumberland sausages.
