C&O Canal Towpath Trail: Built between 1828 and 1850, the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal begins in Washington DC at the north bank of the Potomac River. The towpath is 184.5 miles long and ends in Cumberland, Maryland. Although the canal was in operation periodically until 1924, it is now dry, and because it is unpaved, you will get a workout when biking this scenic trail.

Great Allegheny Passage Trail: This bike trail continues where the C & O Canal Towpath Trail ends in Cumberland, Maryland. Extending from Cumberland, Maryland to McKeesport, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, the 322 total mile bike trail offers varying surfaces and traffic free conditions in which to travel. Construction is slated to begin in the spring 2010 to finish the connection to the city of Pittsburgh.
