The Starlight Spectacular Bicycle Ride took place on Saturday, June 15, 2013. The ride is a pleasure, fun ride for people of all ages and abilities. The ride was almost cancelled due to the wild fires that are ablaze in the area, however it went as planned.
More Than 1500 Riders This Year
Now in its 19th year, the ride has traditionally started at midnight, but last year the time was moved up to 10:30 so riders could finish a bit earlier. Over 1500 people, and their bike riding friends, decorated their bicycles with bright colors, flashing lights, balloons, and anything you could imagine. They also decorated themselves in every conceivable style of costume. There are awards for the best decorated bike and best costume, so participants typically go all out for this one.
The main sponsor of the event is Heuberger Subaru of Colorado Springs. Entry fee for adults is $45, with different price points for people of different ages. Children 6 and under rode for free. Proceeds from the event benefit the Trails and Open Space Coalition.
Known as a magical party on wheels, this event is something that attracts people from long distances, not just people from the Colorado Springs area. The weather was perfect: skies were clears and the stars twinkled above.
There was music, food and merriment and the festivities began at 9:00 that Saturday night.
It's Not A Race, It's A Fun Ride
Because it isn't a race, but a fun ride, several different routes are planned. Distances vary by route but they are from 14 to 22 miles. The longer rides include a loop through Garden of the Gods. This route has a couple of steep hills, but if you're up to it, the extra effort in pedaling is rewarded by some amazing views.
Regardless of the route, you rode through Colorado Springs and all people asked appeared to be having a great time. It was indeed, a festive occasion.
Cars Not Allowed
For safety, the routes were closed to automobile traffic. Cyclists only had to worry about themselves and other party goers. Bicycles were required to have a front and rear working lights, and all riders had to wear helmets. You cannot bring your dog, glass containers or alcohol.
Prizes and Awards
There were two themed rest stops, with a lot of festivities at each. Prizes were awarded for creativity in decorating bikes and people. Ted's Bicycles, Colorado Springs' oldest bike shop donated two cruiser style bikes and awarded them as prizes in two categories.
The event was considered a great success, if the shouts and singing of the participants can be considered any measure of accomplishment.
Next year's 20th Annual Starlight Spectacular Ride will be held on Saturday – June 14, 2014. Be sure to have your bike decorated and your costume ready.
