Spring is here and it's time to pull your bike out of the garage and get riding! Biking is one of the few recreational activities that the entire family can participate in, young or old. Did you know that even your tail wagging family members can get out and enjoy a good bike ride as well? Bicycle baskets for dogs are designed to enable you to take your furry friends out for a spin with you.
There are three main types of baskets that are made for taking dogs with you on your ride: wicker, fabric of some sort, and metal. They each have pros and cons, depending on exactly what you are after. Wicker baskets are both visually appealing and very practical when riding on hot summer days. Wicker allows great ventilation so that your dog remains nice and cool throughout your ride. Other "baskets" are made of various kinds of fabric. Most common is what you would see used for making backpacks. It's strong and comes in a variety of colors. Many have extra features like water bottle holders, inner leash straps, and rain covers. However, these are not the most sturdy of baskets and sometimes require modifications to make you and your pup feel more secure. Metal baskets, though not exclusively made as dog baskets, work well for carrying your dog, and can offer the highest weight limits. Various basket liners are available to make the the basket more comfortable for your dog to sit in.
Weight limits for most of these baskets tend to be around the 15 lbs, which make them suitable for the smaller breeds. Some of the metal bike baskets are strong enough to hold medium sized dogs on the lower end of the weight spectrum. Additionally, baskets that go on the rear of your bicycle, attaching to a bike rack, offer stability and higher weight limits. Check with the manufacturer to get the specs on these baskets if you are planning on using them for medium sized dog. The only real option for taking the larger dogs with you on rides, besides making them run, is to get a pull behind trailer. Trailers will be addressed in a later article.
Before taking your dog out for it's first ride in a basket, it's best to err on the side of caution. Even though you know your pet, take it slow and give him or her a chance to adjust to the new sensations of being up in the basket and moving around. Doggy treats are always helpful! Even a reluctant dog can be converted to the joys of cycling with love, patience, and TREATS!
Keep in mind that safety should always be the #1 priority! Check to make sure the basket is attached properly and securely. Attaching your dog to a leash and onto your handlebars is a good idea until you know how your pet will react to different situations. Most important - don't rush your dog into anything they aren't ready to do.
Biking is a fantastic past time that can be enjoyed by the entire family - including your four legged family members. There are wonderful accessories for bicycles for every bike made, and every kind of rider. Bicycle baskets for dogs is the best way to accessorize your bike so that your dog can join in the fun! The perfect dog bicycle carrier is out there, suitable for whatever you and your dog's requirements may be.
