The man has had enough! After over a decade of fighting allegations of doping and constant questions of his integrity by high-profile cyclists, anti-doping agencies, Journalists and US Senators, the fight has worn down the once mighty athlete. This is the latest Lance Armstrong news.
What is going on?
The USADA is stripping Lance of his 7 Tour de France titles and his silver Olympic medal and banning him from all USADA sanctioned events because they suspect him of doping. Yes, you read that right, they suspect him, no evidence of any rules broken, just suspect him of doping. This is the result of him giving up the fight over proving his innocence in this matter.
Why even test for doping?
This seems to be the question of the day. How can a sanctioning body do this without any failed tests? Over this mans career he has been the most tested athlete in history. they have tested his urine, hair, fingernails, all with negative results. One could say they know the science of Lance Armstrong! By making this decision one has to ask why they are testing at all. What does this say for the integrity of the testing program? And my biggest question is why is this OK at all? What kind of a president does this set for the future? If they decide a person might be doping they can destroy his career?
Why did he quit fighting?
Mr. Armstrong was quoted as saying this nonsense was effecting his foundation and family and enough is enough. Lance is the founder and chairman of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. He is also a cancer survivor, having beat late stage tescular cancer in 1996. This man has raised millions of dollars for cancer research and development and is an icon in his sport. He has fought for everything he has achieved and finally has had enough of all the time it was taking to deal with this.
What now?
He will be stripped of his titles and medal, and he will be banned from competing, but this will not sit well with the masses of supporters he has. Many people who are not fans of cycling are stepping to the plate for this man. There is so much at stake here not only in this mans reputation, but in the ability of a sanctioning body being able to destroy a man or woman's achievements because of suspecting behavior, without any real evidence.
Any man who can beat all the odds this man has beaten, and also achieve all the success in working with a foundation that helps humanity, is OK in my book. My judgement has to side with Lance, until evidence says otherwise. How about you? What are your views on this?
