Gorgeous Kansas Terrain - Viewed Via The Bike Trails
Since much of central Kansas is fairly flat, some of the best places to ride are around the outside edges of the state. Nearly all the towns listed below are near the state line. This makes it easier for people from surrounding areas to come visit all that Kansas has to offer bikers of all skill levels! Here are some of the best.
Wilderness Park near Pittsburg, Kansas has something for everyone. The trails here started out as fire roads near an abandoned coal mine. There are even some lakes in the area that are quite beautiful. The area is hilly, with lots of rocks, roots, and twists and turns, but there are some flat sections as well. The area is heavily wooded. You can find more challenging trails off the main section, but they are not well-marked so you'll have to explore.
Near Atchison you'll find another park with some trails that may also lack sufficient markings. But you can get a map of the Jackson Park trails in town which will help you out significantly. New trails are being added, as well, and include gravel routes, log climbs, and other challenges to keep experienced riders happy. The entire park is beautiful and these trails could become very popular as the area gets more visitors and becomes more well known.
If you don't mind braving killer mosquitoes at Camp Horizon not far from Arkansas City, intermediate and advanced bike riders will love the network of complex trails there. Set above the Arkansas River, riders will find lots of rapid descents and drops, steep inclines to get there, rocks, ramps, and other challenges for a fast-paced, technical ride. Hint: Pack bug spray and you'll enjoy the route a lot more!
River Trail near Lawrence is a 9-mile loop. The terrain is flat so you can build up some fantastic speeds. There are few minor climbs, switchbacks, and muddy areas, but places to bail out if you don't want to ride the full 9 miles. Watch out for other bikers.
Want to know a closely guarded secret? Until now, that is. You can find some great new mountain biking trails at the Perry State Park. These trails have something for everyone and are well-marked as to the skill level required to navigate each section of the course. You can get a map that will help you plan your route in advance, as well. Forests, views of Lake Perry, roller coaster hills, twisting turns, rocky obstacles, creek crossings, and rapid descents are the name of the game here!
Manhattan, Kansas has some of the most extreme mountain biking anywhere in the state. The Tuttle Spillway Cycle area is no exception! This was originally designed for motorcycles and ATVs so be on the lookout for others especially on warm, sunny weekends. Otherwise, you are in for the ride of your life! The steep drops will leave you and your bike airborne again and again!
Since many of the trails we've listed above are near lakes and/or rivers, beware of riding wet and muddy trails. This can lead to erosion and cause the deterioration of these trails that many have come to love. Always be safe when riding. Happy trails!
