For people who like to run or walk to stay fit, the obvious answer is a treadmill. Treadmills come in various sizes and priced for different budgets. Elliptical machines have also become popular, and are easier on the knees than pounding the pavement.

But not everyone has room in their home for a big machine. If that's the case with you, or if it's just not in your budget, try video exercise programs. There are many different types, from full aerobics programs to others that simulate walking for a set number of miles. The good ones will include warm up and cool down routines. Some 'deluxe' sets will include stretch bands or hand held weights to make your at home exercise routine more complete.

At home walking routines can be stepped up (so to speak) by using the inexpensive sturdy plastic steps made for step aerobics classes. You can also build your own simple step using wood. Stepping up and down from a short step is a great way to add burn to your routine. If you have a stairway in your home, you don't even have to invest in anything - just use the bottom step. And if your serious about raising your heart rate, trying going up and down your entire flight of stairs for 10-15 minutes.

Cyclists are another group of fitness enthusiasts that have trouble with inclement weather. A stationary bike is one solution. Like treadmills though, it is a large piece of equipment, and not everyone has room in their home. In that case, indoor bike trainers are a great way to get your exercise inside. Just hook it up and literally in seconds, you'll be riding comfortably on your regular bike. Because it's your own bicycle, it gives you a more realistic ride than a separate stationary bike.
