While speaking of mountain bike history, you will realize that it is usually associated with the seventies. Looking far back into the end of the 19th century, the earliest examples of off road bikes were considered to be the mountain bicycle of the time.
During an expedition in August of 1896, a group of Buffalo soldiers used modified bikes that could be efficiently ridden off road from Missoula, Montana to Yellowstone and back.
The time when pioneers of modern mountain bike and sport gathered to organize a bicycling event which was later known as the first downhill time trial is the reason why mountain bicycle history is often associated with the seventies.
The memorable event was held via a fire road now referred to as Repack Road in Fairfax, California. Riders would start at different times, and since there were no mountain bikes at that time, riders used bicycles known modified balloon-tired cruisers with gears.
Companies started to manufacture this type of bicycle in the eighties and over the years bicycle technology has improved making road bikes more durable and ergonomic as never before.
The off road event are held in different parts of the world from which they have branched out in a number of categories like downhill, free ride or even cross country. People's talents have been developed because of this.
Special thanks have to be given to the persons and events that helped shape mountain bicycling as to what it is now. In 1988, the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame was established in Crested Butte, Colorado.
