Choosing the Right Type of Bicycle

Riding a bike has many different purposes. Choosing the right type of bicycle for the intended purpose provides the best results for the user. The most common types of men's and women's bicycles are commuter, racing, touring and recumbent. Regardless of the type of design, all bicycles assist the rider with fitness and are eco-friendly. Bicycles are easy to maintain and repair. They are best used in fair weather on dry pavement, but can be used as emergency transportation in a variety of situations.

Commuting
Used primarily for getting from Point A to Point B, commuter bikes are designed for shorter distances and dressier attire. They may be hybrid bicycles to reduce the amount of exertion required. They are not designed specifically for speed, as in racing bicycles.

Touring
When leisurely riding or enjoying a little bit of exercise is in the plan, touring bikes are the most practical choice. They feature comfort, durability and a sturdy frame. They can carry tote bags, picnic baskets and luggage for transport. These are the bicycles used for short or long rides with friends or for the casual exercise trip.

Racing
Racing bikes must take several features into account. Their structure should be lightweight and aerodynamic to allow for top speed. They should be comfortable to prevent soreness during a race. The wheels must be easy to remove and controls easy to adjust to prevent lost time due to a flat tire or sudden change in weather conditions.

Recumbent
Recumbent bikes offer a different type of workout from regular bicycles. The rider is seated in a reclining position, rather than a forward racing or upright touring position. The rider's weight is ergonomically distributed and more aerodynamic, with the legs forward. Wheel bases vary by manufacturer.

Adult Bikes
Bikes for men and women are similar in purpose and style. Their weight, seating and handlebars may differ to accommodate the different physical characteristics between men and women. For example, women's pedals may be slightly smaller and have a different type of tread to allow for better traction with women's shoes. Men's bikes are typically built to efficiently handle the heavier weight and larger frame of male riders.

Many professional riders and biking enthusiasts have more than one type of bicycle. They use different styles for different purposes. Casual riders are more likely to choose from among the various types to suit their needs of exercise, commuting, travel or even weekend racing.
