Cycling Clothing UK: What to Wear When Mountain Biking
Mountain biking or further afield, is one of life's great pleasures. However, things can get chilly, particularly if you decide to go cycling during the colder months, or at high altitude.
Many bikers spend a lot of time researching the best bikes to suit their needs, but forget to devote the same level of care to selecting the right clothing for the job. Our recommendation? Don't grab any old item of cycling clothing, mountain biking fans; take the time to get it right, and you'll be richly rewarded by enjoying a much more comfortable ride.
Mountain biking UK clothing guide:
If you want to stay warm in colder temperatures, whilst having the freedom to cool off when you work up a sweat, layering is the right approach. Here's a quick guide to getting your layers right.
Invest in a decent base layer: The purpose of a base layer is to wick sweat away from your body and keep you comfortable. Don't make the mistake of thinking a basic T-shirt will do the same job; it simply soaks up the sweat and heat. Instead, invest in high quality base layers, made from materials such as wool, polyester or Thinsulate.
Keep insulated. Your layer of insulation should be worn over your base layer; and its main purpose is exactly as it sounds... to keep you well insulated! Ideally, it shouldn't be as tight fitting as your base layer; a jersey or fleece is both ideal.
Longer legs. It's a matter of taste, but many pro cyclists prefer longer cycling shorts in colder climates. If you're out somewhere particularly cold, choose a pair with a fleece lining to keep the chilly air out.
Windproof hands. Don't even attempt to head out in chilly weather without gloves, as your fingers will rapidly lose heat and cause you considerable discomfort. Invest in a pair of cycling gloves, which will help keep the heat in, whilst allowing you to shift gears and keep your grip.
Get the right headgear. Of course, it goes without saying that you'll be wearing a helmet. However, you may want to buy a 'skull cap' under your helmet, to help provide insulation and keep sweat away from your scalp.
Invest in shoe covers. There are a number of ways you can help to keep your feet warm whilst cycling. If you want to save money, a simple pair of thick woollen socks will help. However, if you really want to protect your toes from the elements, consider buying a pair of shoe covers to wear over your cycling shoes, which will really help to keep the heat in.
