Pedal through the Blistering Cold!
The winter period is a time which undoubtedly decides who is most committed to their sport. Sure, it's a great idea to go get your heart pumping in the sun and temperate heat, but when it starts hitting minus figures, and the possibility of chin-freeze begins to loom ever more, the idea doesn't sound as positive. In this way, the winter cold is the ultimate test of the true sportsperson - one who is committed to their activity, willing to endure all that is necessary to make sure they don't fall behind and out of practice.
Amongst other sports the cyclists are the ones hit the hardest by the distinct drop in temperature. Being inappropriately attired will make even the most cold-blooded of cyclists turn to ice, and not just the chin either. It's the hands and feet that are most vulnerable, fixed to where they should be on the bike and lacking any physical exertion. It's all too common to dismount after a journey and realise all feeling is lost in these parts, leading to a rather embarrassing attempt to walk casually away from your chained up vehicle.
Fear not though fellow cyclists, those in the clothing business have designed cycle-wear that optimises preparation for the cold weather. Top quality brands like Assos supply the necessary items to survive the freeze. One such is the Powerstatic undervest, which acts as a base layer to provide insulation and warmth. The vest is a very helpful garment in that it allows transpiration to occur without compromising warmth and comfort.
Assos clothing isn't all that is available as I'm sure dedicated cyclists will know. Specialized, another top-quality cycle brand have recently released a new MTB shoe, one that combines ergonomics and affordability to make a very popular purchase. This Specialized MTB shoe features a lightweight nylon sole and hard moulded toe kick protector. Furthermore the shoe provides enough insulation to keep the foot at a temperate heat, providing a workout that's as comfortable as it is rewarding.
Even saddles are of prime importance when tackling the cold. Not enough people know that many saddles (usually ones that come with the bike) restrict blood flow around the lower body. Ever come off your bike and find your tailbone is aching or numb? That's the saddle's fault. Not a good thing to happen in winter conditions. Luckily Specialized have solved this problem with their specialized saddles, specifically ones with a hole cut through the middle to prevent blood restriction, being both minimalistic and light in design.
