How do you make compost from leaves shed by trees?

Leaf Composting Guide

Leaf compost is a nutrient-rich, organic soil amendment that can improve the health and fertility of your soil. It's also a great way to recycle leaves and reduce waste.

Step 1: Gather Your Leaves

The first step is to gather your leaves. If you have trees on your property, you can easily rake up the leaves that fall in the fall. You can also get leaves from a neighbor or a local leaf collection program.

Step 2: Shred the Leaves

Shredding the leaves will help them decompose more quickly. You can do this by running them through a leaf shredder or mower. If you don't have a shredder or mower, you can also tear the leaves into small pieces by hand.

Step 3: Build Your Compost Pile

Choose a location for your compost pile that is shady and well-drained. The pile should be about 3 feet wide and 3 feet tall.

Start the compost pile by adding a layer of shredded leaves. Then, add a layer of soil or compost. Repeat this process until the pile is about 3 feet tall.

Step 4: Water and Turn the Compost Pile

Water the compost pile regularly so that it is moist but not soggy. Turn the pile every few weeks to aerate it and help it decompose.

Step 5: Wait for the Compost to Mature

The compost will take about 3-6 months to mature. Once it is mature, the compost will be a dark, crumbly material.

Step 6: Use the Compost

Leaf compost can be used to improve the health and fertility of your soil. It can be added to garden beds, flower pots, or used as mulch.
