Tips on How to Plan and Prepare yourself for Everest Base Camp Trek

Firstly, decide the dates you want to go for Everest Base Camp Trek and try to book your tickets from Kathmandu as early as possible.

For your fitness planning, do everyday jogging or running or brisk walking, whichever suits you the best. It is important that you keep yourself used to long duration of walking. Please note, you are preparing for a trek to the Everest Base Camp and not going for a summit. Explore your local trekking options, go on some small trekking and hiking activities. Ensure the everyday walking, jogging etc are happening. You may consider going for long hour walking in weekends, as getting used to long hours of walking will help you build some endurance and builds your patience level. You may consider to stop any heavy weight exercises at least 7 or 10 days before your trek so that you do not risk of any muscle injury. As by now, you have paid and booked everything needed for this trek so do not risk any injury to yourself.

You need to travel light so think carefully, what all is needed to be carried. A pair of trekking pants, 1 or 2 shorts, 3 to 4 T shirts, a down jacket, a wind protecting jacket, some thermal shocks, regular shocks, wet tissue papers, dry tissue papers, polarized sunglasses,  a good trekking shoe, a floater / crocs, petroleum jellies, sun blocks, some dry fruits and chocolates should be good enough. Also take some water purifying drops or tablets from Kathmandu as you will need to consume live stream waters in the trekking route. However, you may consider buying bottled waters in the trekking region but they are very expensive and also a serious threat to the nature.

Carry your camera, lenses, mobile and power banks. Also carry a first aid kit including some basic medicines such as paracetamol, Betadine ointments, crape bandage etc.

Ensure you have taken print outs of your planned itineraries, trekking maps, key contact numbers etc.

You also need to decide the support you need and basis that freeze on some service provider to get your accommodations, porters etc. Ensure you are booking with some professionally managed and experienced people and verify that they are a registered agency with Nepal government.

There are several companies, who make such treks but without any valid registrations in Nepal and may induce you by saying permits are given for individual etc. They are partly right, it is true a trekking permit is given to an individual, however, going in a group trekking by some organizer which is not registered in Nepal is illegal and may attract heavy penalties and further, if any incident or mishap happens then the situation may go out of your hand. You must ascertain all points and decide on a an agency of your choice.

You may also decide to go on your own for this trek. There are some people who do it. If you are confident, then you must go alone on your own. The differences of taking support service are the porters, local support and expertise that you will get. The porters carry your luggage and they come very handy when there is some weather challenge as they are well versed with the region, they know the rescue service providers, nearest safe place and health posts. Otherwise, Mount Everest is Mount Everest and it remains same to all.

Ensure, your planned itineraries have rest days for acclimatization. Also check on your altitude gain plans. It is best that you do not cross 400 to 500 meter in terms of daily altitude gain.

On your budget and expenses it will depend on type of agency you are booking or going alone. On an average, for food, Nepali Rupees of 1800/- per day is enough and you may need little more or less depending on your appetite.

Here are some tips and tricks that you may consider while you are on the trek.

Enjoy, this is going to be a lifetime experience for you.

Please note, you are in a trekking expedition and not a competition. So walk or trek on your own comfort. You are not going to be late for anything and will be able to make it to the next milestones.

Take some rests in between, but do not over rest or make it very frequent. Instead, walk as slow as possible, you may call is rest-walking. It does not matter what speed you are walking but just walk at your own comfort level.

Drink enough water; literally drink as much as you can throughout the day.

Start treks early after your breakfast.

Keep a check on daily altitude gains.

Watch-out for symptoms of altitude sickness such as acute headache. If you feel any severe acute sickness, then please rush down and come to lower altitude areas.
